South Hampstead is a vibrant, growing Jewish orthodox community. It is a member of the United Synagogue, the largest synagogal organisation in the United Kingdom. The community currently has a membership of approximately 850 families. Its membership is diverse both in terms of age and background. Groups are comprised of youth, young professionals, young marrieds, families, the mature years, singles and single agains. There are a large number of births within the community each year.

South Hampstead has a reputation for warmth, humour, informality and a non-judgemental approach. The least and most committed sit comfortably side by side and the community enjoys an atmosphere of unusual harmony. Rabbi Shlomo and Lynndy Levin and their family have provided rabbinic leadership to the community since 1985

In addition to Shabbat and Yom Tov services, there daily services in each morning and evening. There is a programme of educational events such as a scholar-in-residence programme or occasional speakers which take place on selected Shabbatot and a full adult education programme. Most mid-week study is of an informal nature in small groups. There are a full range of children services on Shabbat [Children Services], a successful youth and a Sunday cheder. SHY is a successful and energetic group for the 12-18 year olds, there are Friday night dinners for young professionals and for young marrieds and there is a Friendship Club for the elderly.

The synagogue is located in the Hampstead area of London and is 3.5 miles from Golders Green and Hendon where the majority of kosher facilities, schools and study centres are located. There are two Jewish primary schools within a 15 minute radius of the synagogue and a mikva has recently opened in the area. There is no eruv at present. The synagogue is 15-20 minutes from central London by car.
